Synopsis:

FROZEN METHANE

In January 2025, a team of scientists from the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME) and the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) travels to Antarctica to explore one of the planet’s hidden frontiers — the methane hydrates buried beneath the seafloor.

These frozen compounds, trapped under layers of ice and sediment, hold vast amounts of methane — a powerful greenhouse gas that could play a key role in the Earth’s future climate.

Aboard the research vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa, the ICEFLAME expedition faces extreme conditions to uncover how the thawing of these frozen reserves may affect the planet’s stability. Through science, exploration, and human perseverance, the documentary takes us deep below the surface to understand how small changes at the bottom of the ocean can echo across the entire world.

A visual journey through one of the most remote and fragile places on Earth — where science meets the unknown.
